The unheralded “handful(s) of American
soldiers” were led by these commanders and staff of the 51ECB, themselves
mostly college-age young men become leaders with life and death
responsibilities. This photo was taken in Germany, April 1945. Major
Yates is absent, having been reassigned just prior to the photo
